What we do from Calgary

Most Western Canadian work we take on is brownfield. A plant is inlet-limited, a battery is producing off-spec, a compressor is tripping on hot days, or a licence obligation has a date attached to it. The work starts with measuring what is actually there, because the as-built condition of a facility built in the 1990s is rarely what the drawings show.

From that baseline we move through detailed design, procurement, construction management and startup, with the same process engineers on the file the whole way.

Alberta project proof

The reference project for our Alberta work is a 10,000 BOED sour oil battery at Fox Creek, in west-central Alberta, delivered for a Western Canadian producer. Tundra ran it under an EPCM model as the owner’s engineer, with the operator keeping contractual control and procurement flexibility throughout.

The facility was licensed under AER Directive 056 and built to comply with the applicable AER directives, including Directive 060 for flaring, incinerating and venting. Sour service is the part that dictates the engineering. The H2S case drives equipment specification, shutdown philosophy, setback and emergency response planning, and none of it can be retrofitted once the licence application is filed.

Execution was prefabrication-first. Structural steel and piping were one hundred per cent shop-fabricated, so there were no field piping welds and no field hydrotests, and the site went from bare ground to mechanical completion in roughly four weeks. We built a survey-grade 3D model of the facility so the next expansion could be designed against the as-built condition rather than the original drawings.

Alongside battery work, the Calgary team has designed a large number of single and multi-well pads across Alberta, British Columbia and Saskatchewan — separation, metering, line heaters and tank storage. That is the volume work that keeps a facilities group current on AER licensing and measurement practice.

Alberta regulatory context

Projects in Alberta answer to the Alberta Energy Regulator, and the design has to prove compliance rather than simply achieve it. That shapes the scope of work in ways that are not always obvious at the estimate stage: directive-driven design requirements, licensing and amendment timelines, measurement and reporting obligations, and end-of-life liability that is assessed long before a facility is retired.

We handle EPAP programs, regulatory submissions, suspended well programs and asset retirement as engineering work rather than paperwork, because the submission is only as good as the design behind it.

Professional registration and cross-border reach

Our principal engineer is a registered professional engineer in Alberta, British Columbia and Saskatchewan, and additionally holds Professional Engineer licences in Texas, New Mexico, Colorado, Montana, North Dakota, Alaska and Wisconsin. Tundra Engineering holds the corresponding permits to practise and firm registrations in those jurisdictions, including an APEGA Permit to Practice in Alberta. Registration numbers are provided on request for prequalification.

For operators with assets on both sides of the border, that combination is the practical argument for using one firm. The same engineers can carry a design from an Alberta gas plant to a project on Alaska’s North Slope without handing the package to a separate consultant for a jurisdictional seal.
