A mechanical city, whether it admits it or not
Calgary keeps its engineering heritage in plain sight if you know where to look. Heritage Park, on the shore of the Glenmore Reservoir, still runs a working steam locomotive and a paddlewheeler, and the volunteers who maintain them are frequently retired tradespeople from the same shops that build compressor packages today. Out on the western edge of the city, the bobsleigh and luge track at Canada Olympic Park — built for 1988 and still one of the fastest in the world — is a refrigeration and structural problem disguised as a sport. Every July the Stampede midway assembles a small city of rotating machinery in ten days, runs it in front of a million people, and takes it apart again. This is a town that is comfortable with moving parts.
The industrial version of that competence sits in the Foothills Industrial Park, along Barlow and Blackfoot Trails and out through Rocky View County: packagers, machine shops, seal and bearing distributors, balancing services, module yards and the fabricators who will build whatever a Calgary engineer draws. It is one of the densest concentrations of rotating equipment expertise in North America, and it exists because Alberta needed to compress and move gas across enormous distances for a very long time. When Tundra’s mechanical group specifies a package, the shop building it is usually a twenty-minute drive away, and that proximity shows up in the quality of the finished unit.
Gas compression and compressor stations
Compression is the heart of most facilities we work on. The mechanical scope runs from selecting the right machine for the duty — reciprocating, screw or centrifugal — through cylinder sizing and load steps, driver selection, pulsation and vibration analysis, cooler and scrubber design, lube and seal systems, foundations and skid design, noise attenuation and building layout. Station design adds the piping, the recycle and blowdown philosophy, the fuel gas conditioning, the flare tie-ins and the maintenance access that determines whether a valve change takes four hours or a shift.
Alberta conditions drive several of these choices. Ambient swings of seventy degrees between summer and winter design cases change cooler sizing and turndown behaviour dramatically; a machine optimised for August will be running well off its best point in January. Turndown matters here more than in most jurisdictions because declining gathering systems mean a station commissioned at full rate may spend most of its life at half. Designing for the decline curve rather than the first year is one of the more useful things a mechanical engineer can do for an Alberta operator.
Pumps and rotating equipment
Pumps get less attention than compressors and cause a disproportionate share of unplanned downtime. Our work covers hydraulic selection and NPSH verification, seal plan selection, materials for produced water and sour service, vibration analysis, alignment and baseplate design, and the rather common exercise of working out why a pump that was correctly specified is failing every few months. The answer is usually system-side: a suction line that starves it, a control valve doing the throttling that a variable speed drive should be doing, or an operating point that has drifted a long way left of best efficiency as the field has changed.
We also handle the wider rotating equipment population — blowers, fans, agitators, gensets and drives — and the reliability engineering that connects them. Condition monitoring, vibration route data and oil analysis produce a great deal of information that most operators are not using, and turning that into a maintenance decision is cheaper than any capital fix.
Flare mitigation
Flaring is the most visible thing the industry does, and in Alberta it is measured, reported and constrained under Directive 060. Reducing it is partly an engineering problem and partly a design philosophy problem. Conservation tie-ins, vapour recovery units, flare gas recovery compression, better blowdown practices, instrument air instead of gas-driven pneumatics, and simply resizing a flare system that was specified for a plant configuration that no longer exists all contribute. Tundra does the flare load studies, the radiation and dispersion calculations, the stack sizing and the conservation economics, and we do them with an eye on what the operator will actually be able to run.
There is a local dimension. Calgary sits close enough to producing areas that flares are visible from acreages and small towns, and a well-lit flare on a cold clear night generates phone calls. The community consultation that surrounds sour and high-volume flaring here is genuine, and an operator with a credible mitigation plan has an easier time of it than one without.
EPAP programs
Alberta’s Equipment Population and Pressure-Volume-Temperature reporting and the broader measurement accountability framework require producers to demonstrate that what they report reflects what the equipment actually does. Building and maintaining an EPAP program means reconciling the equipment population against the field, verifying measurement points and proving procedures, closing volumetric balances, and documenting it well enough to pass an audit. It is administrative work with a mechanical foundation, and it goes badly for operators who have grown by acquisition and inherited three different sets of records.
We build these programs so that they survive staff turnover, and we tend to find real money in the process. Measurement errors discovered during an EPAP reconciliation frequently change allocation between partners, which is a conversation worth having with the numbers in hand.
Maintenance and integrity management
Maintenance management is where mechanical engineering meets the calendar. We help operators build maintenance strategies that are risk-based rather than habitual: criticality assessment, task selection, spares strategy, and a computerised maintenance management system that people will actually use. The failure mode we see most often is a work order backlog full of low-value tasks obscuring the handful that matter.
Integrity management covers the pressure equipment side — vessels, exchangers, piping and tanks — against the Alberta Boilers Safety Association framework and the applicable codes. Inspection planning, corrosion monitoring, fitness-for-service assessment and repair engineering all sit here. In a province with a large population of assets built in the seventies and eighties, this is increasingly the work that keeps facilities licensed and insurable.
Why a Calgary mechanical group
Because the shops, the packagers and the field crews are here, and because our engineers have been in those shops. There is a difference between a specification written by someone who has watched a skid being built and one written from a template, and it shows up in the number of field changes. Calgary’s trades culture — SAIT, the union halls, the family-run machine shops that have been in Ogden or Bowness for two generations — is a resource that most cities do not have.
It also means we can be at your station. Most of Alberta is a day trip from here, the airport connects to the north and the northeast, and a mechanical problem that has been described three times on the phone is usually solved in twenty minutes on site. If you have a compressor that will not make rate, a pump that keeps failing, a flare volume you need to bring down, or a maintenance program that has become a backlog, this is the group to call.
Specifications written by people who have been in the shop
Rotating equipment problems are usually decided long before commissioning, in the specification and in the shop. We write datasheets that close off the ambiguities vendors otherwise resolve in their own favour, we attend factory acceptance tests that matter, and we witness the string test rather than reading the certificate. On a compressor package the difference between a good unit and a troublesome one is rarely the machine; it is the auxiliaries, the piping, the supports and the instrumentation around it.
Alberta has an advantage here that clients elsewhere would envy. The packagers are local, the fabricators are local, and an engineer can be in the shop on a Tuesday afternoon and back at a desk by four. Problems that would take a month of correspondence in another market get resolved standing beside the skid with a tape measure.
There is a cultural dimension too. Calgary respects trades in a way that not every professional city does. The machinists, millwrights and welders in Foothills Industrial Park, Ogden and Bowness are frequently second or third generation, and they will tell an engineer plainly when a drawing cannot be built. Engineers who listen to that get better designs; engineers who do not get field change notices. The Stampede handshake culture and the shop floor operate on the same principle, which is that your word and your workmanship are the same asset.
If you have a machine that will not hold rate, a chronic pump failure, or a package specification going out to bid that nobody has independently reviewed, that is the point at which a mechanical engineer earns their fee several times over.
