Consulting engineers with a Calgary address
Calgary sits where the Bow and the Elbow meet, on a shelf of prairie that tips west into the foothills and then, about an hour later, into the front ranges of the Rockies. The North-West Mounted Police put a post at that confluence in 1875 and called it Fort Calgary; the reconstructed site still stands at the east end of downtown, a short walk from the glass towers where most of the province’s facility projects are budgeted, argued over and eventually approved. That geography explains a lot about how engineering consulting works here. The people who own the assets, the people who finance them and the people who design them are usually within a few blocks of one another, often connected by the Plus 15 skywalk network, which is the largest elevated pedestrian system of its kind in the world and, for four months of the year, the only civilised way to get to a lunch meeting.
The culture that grew out of that proximity is informal but unsentimental. Calgary has been through enough cycles that nobody here mistakes a good quarter for a trend. Offices empty out and refill, downtown vacancy climbs and falls, and the same engineers who were doing greenfield gas plants in one decade are doing decommissioning, emissions reduction and carbon capture studies in the next. It has produced a particular kind of client: pragmatic, allergic to consultant theatre, and far more interested in whether a number is defensible than in how nicely it is formatted. Management of change in a city that never stops changing
Every July the city puts on a ten-day party, hangs bunting on the downtown towers, and roughly a million people pass through Stampede Park. Pancake breakfasts appear in parking lots, and executives who spend the rest of the year in suits turn up in boots and a white hat. Then it ends, the grandstand comes down, and the city goes back to work. Calgarians are unusually comfortable with temporary arrangements that have to be reversed cleanly afterwards, which is a surprisingly good way to think about management of change.
Management of Change (MOC) is the discipline of making sure that a modification to an operating facility — a new tie-in, a different set point, a bypassed device, a temporary spool, a change of service — is evaluated, approved, documented and closed out before it quietly becomes permanent. The failures that make the news almost never begin with a bad design. They begin with a small, sensible, undocumented change that nobody revisited. In Alberta, where a large share of production comes from older facilities that have been debottlenecked and re-piped repeatedly over thirty or forty years, the risk is cumulative. A plant near Rocky Mountain House or Grande Prairie may have had a hundred small changes since commissioning, each one reasonable on its own.
Our consultants set up or audit MOC programs so that the paperwork actually reflects the plant, and so that the Alberta Energy Regulator’s expectations, your internal process safety requirements and the day-to-day reality of the operators in the field all point in the same direction. That usually means fewer forms rather than more, clear thresholds for what needs engineering review, and a closeout step that nobody can skip.
As-built drawings and a city that keeps rebuilding itself
Calgary is a young city and it shows no particular reverence for its own building stock. The East Village, derelict for decades, is now home to Studio Bell and the Central Library, a building people fly in to photograph. The Peace Bridge, Santiago Calatrava’s red helix over the Bow, replaced a plan for something ordinary. Inglewood, the oldest neighbourhood in the city, has gone from warehouses to record shops and coffee roasters without losing the rail line running through it. Bridgeland, Kensington and the Beltline have all been rewritten in the last twenty years. The city changes faster than its own maps.
Facilities do the same thing, and that is the case for a complete as-built site drawing package. Most brownfield engineering problems in this province are not engineering problems at all — they are records problems. The P&IDs show a line that was removed in 2011, the plot plan predates the compressor building, and the electrical single line has three generations of pencil on it. You cannot design against a drawing set that no longer matches the plant, and every hour a designer spends guessing is an hour that reappears later as a field change.
Tundra rebuilds that record from the plant as it stands today: field verification, 3D laser scanning where the congestion justifies it, and a coordinated issue of P&IDs, plot plans, isometrics, single lines and equipment lists that agree with one another. The deliverable is not a pile of files. It is a package that a new engineer, a new operator or a new owner can pick up and trust, which matters enormously in a market where assets change hands as often as they do here.
Artificial intelligence and the other Calgary economy
The city has spent a decade deliberately widening its economic base. The University of Calgary and SAIT feed a technology sector that now occupies a good deal of the office space the energy sector gave back, and Platform Calgary’s innovation centre sits a block from the Central Library in that same rebuilt East Village. Telus Spark, out by the zoo, has been quietly teaching a generation of Calgary kids that engineering is something you do with your hands and a screen at the same time. The result is a workforce that is comfortable with data in a way that the industry was not fifteen years ago.
Applied to production operations and facilities, artificial intelligence is far less exotic than the marketing suggests. It is pattern recognition against historian data: flagging a compressor whose vibration signature is drifting, catching a separator that is running outside its envelope before the operator does, predicting which wells are heading for a workover, and reconciling measurement data that nobody has time to reconcile by hand. Tundra’s role is to keep that work honest — to make sure the instrumentation underneath the model is trustworthy, that the recommendations are checked against process fundamentals, and that a model output never quietly becomes a control decision without an engineer in the loop. Good data infrastructure first, clever analytics second. That order is not negotiable.
Working here, practically speaking
The chinook arch that appears over the western horizon in January can lift the temperature thirty degrees in a day, which is pleasant for people and hard on steel, foundations and anything that has been sitting frozen. Winter construction windows are short and expensive; spring breakup closes roads; and the field crews you need are competing with the same crews everyone else needs. Any schedule written from a Calgary desk has to respect all of that, and a consultant who has not worked a shutdown in February will get it wrong.
The upside is access. Sites in the Deep Basin, the Montney and the Cardium are a drive or a short flight away. Kananaskis and Banff are close enough that a Friday site visit can end at a trailhead, which is one of the reasons this city retains technical staff at all. And the professional community is small enough that reputations travel: the engineer who oversold a capital estimate in Red Deer will be recognised at the Petroleum Club within the month.
If you have a facility in Alberta with a change program that has drifted, a drawing set nobody trusts, or a data historian full of information you are not using, those three problems are usually the same problem wearing different clothes. We would rather look at them together, from the plant outward, than one at a time from a spreadsheet.
How an engagement usually starts
Most of our consulting relationships in Calgary begin with a short, cheap piece of work rather than a proposal document. Someone has a number they do not believe, a project that has stopped making sense, or a facility they have just acquired and do not yet understand. We take a week, look at what exists, and come back with a view. If the answer is that the project is sound and does not need us, that is a perfectly good outcome and it tends to produce the next call.
That style suits the city. Calgary is small enough professionally that everyone eventually works with everyone, and the firms that survive here are the ones that behave as though the relationship matters more than the invoice. It is a place where a great deal of business is still done at a Spruce Meadows tent in September, over coffee on 17th Avenue, or at a Chinook Blast event in the middle of a February cold snap because the city decided that hiding indoors all winter was a poor strategy. The Glenbow, Contemporary Calgary and the arts community that has grown up in the Beltline are all funded, in large part, by this industry, and the same names appear on the technical papers and the donor walls.
Practically, what an owner gets from an independent consultant here is a second set of eyes with no stake in the outcome. We do not build, we do not sell equipment and we do not carry the execution contract, so our advice costs the client nothing but the fee. In an industry where a bad sanction decision is measured in tens of millions, that is usually the cheapest insurance on the table.
