Gas engineering in the city that natural gas built

If you want to understand why Calgary looks and behaves the way it does, drive forty minutes southwest to Turner Valley. In 1914 the Dingman No. 1 well came in there, and the wet gas it produced was so plentiful and so lightly valued that the flared surplus lit the valley bright enough to read by at night. Locals called it Hell’s Half Acre. That single discovery pulled capital, engineers and speculators onto the prairie and turned a cattle and railway town into a technical city. You can still see the plant site, and Heritage Park on the Glenmore Reservoir keeps a derrick standing as a reminder. Everything Tundra Engineering does as gas engineers from this office — sizing a plant, chasing a leak, wringing another few percent of liquids out of a stream — is a descendant of that awkward, wasteful, world-changing flare.

Calgary’s relationship with gas is domestic as well as commercial. This is a cold city with a warm January wind, and the chinook arch that appears over the Rockies is the single most Calgarian sight there is: a band of clear sky under a rolled cloud edge, temperature climbing twenty-five degrees before lunch, snow gone from the south-facing streets of Mount Royal while Nose Hill Park stays white. Between chinooks it gets genuinely cold, and gas is what keeps two million square metres of downtown office space and a few hundred thousand houses habitable. People here understand the commodity in a way that is unusual for a major city, which raises the standard of conversation considerably when you sit down to explain a plant modification.

Gas processing and treating plant engineering

The work itself starts with the composition and ends with a contract spec. Alberta gas is not one thing: the Deep Basin, the Montney and the Duvernay all deliver different liquid content, different inerts and, in a great deal of this province, hydrogen sulphide in concentrations that dictate the entire design. Tundra’s gas processing and treating work covers inlet separation and slug catching, dehydration by glycol or molecular sieve, amine sweetening, sulphur handling, refrigeration and liquids recovery, stabilisation, compression, and the relief and flare systems that tie all of it together. We do the process design, the hydraulics, the equipment specification and the datasheets, and we do the tedious part — the mass and energy balance that actually closes, the relief scenarios that stand up to review, and the utility loads nobody accounted for in the concept estimate.

The commercial context is Calgary-specific. Producers here are frequently trying to get third-party gas processed rather than build their own facility, or to take an underused plant and make it earn a fee. That means a great many of our studies are not “design me a plant” but “tell me honestly what this existing plant can take, and what it would cost to get there.” A capacity study done properly on a thirty-year-old sweetening train is worth more than a glossy greenfield concept, and it is far more likely to be sanctioned.

Gas refrigeration and the economics of a few degrees

Refrigeration is where a lot of the money hides. Dropping the temperature of a gas stream with a propane loop, a mechanical refrigeration package or a turbo-expander pulls ethane, propane and butane out of the sales gas and turns them into a separately priced product. The right amount of cooling depends on the liquids market, the sales gas heating value spec, the compression available and the ambient conditions — and in southern Alberta the ambient conditions are theatrical. Design air temperature ranges here span something like seventy degrees Celsius between a July afternoon in the Beltline and a January night when the chinook has failed to arrive. Air coolers sized for the summer case behave very differently in February, and a refrigeration package that was optimised for one season will quietly underperform for the other.

Tundra sizes and reviews refrigeration systems with those swings written into the cases rather than bolted on afterwards. We look at the propane loop as a system: compressor selection and turndown, chiller approach temperatures, hydrate risk and inhibitor injection, the condenser duty on the worst day of the year, and whether the plant can actually run at forty percent of nameplate in shoulder season without tripping. The answer is often that a modest change — a different control philosophy, an economiser, one more stage of separation — recovers more value than a new unit would.

Fugitive emissions, and a city under a microscope

Calgary is a river city with a strong outdoor culture. On any summer evening the Bow is full of rafts drifting past Prince’s Island Park, the pathway network — among the longest urban pathway systems in North America — is busy from Fish Creek all the way to Bowness, and half the city drives west on Highway 1 for the weekend. The people who work in this industry live in that landscape, and their neighbours ask them about methane at dinner parties. There is no version of this business here that can treat emissions as somebody else’s file.

Fugitive emissions studies are the unglamorous mechanism by which that pressure turns into results. The work is a survey and an inventory: optical gas imaging of every component that could leak, quantification, screening against Alberta Energy Regulator Directive 060 and the federal methane regulations, and a repair and re-survey program that closes the loop. Then comes the part that actually reduces emissions — identifying the pneumatic controllers, compressor seals, storage tank vents and glycol still columns responsible for the bulk of the volume, and building a retrofit case with a real payback rather than a compliance shrug. Vented volumes usually dwarf leaked volumes, and clients are regularly surprised by which pieces of equipment dominate their inventory.

Done well, this work pays for itself. Gas that is not vented is gas that is sold, and a credible emissions record has become a condition of doing business with the buyers, lenders and midstream counterparties whose offices are, in most cases, a few blocks from ours.

Why the Calgary office matters

Proximity is the practical argument. From here, a gas plant in the Deep Basin is a morning’s drive or a short flight through YYC, and the regulator, the producers, the fabricators and the process licensors are all in the same time zone and mostly the same postal codes. Our engineers can be on site for a start-up and back for a design review in the same week. The city’s technical labour market is deep enough that specialist experience — sour service, sulphur recovery, expander plants — is available when a project needs it.

The cultural argument is subtler. Calgary is a place where a handshake at a Stampede breakfast still counts for something, where the Petroleum Club and a taproom in Inglewood’s Barley Belt host roughly the same conversations, and where a firm’s reputation is built one honest capital estimate at a time. That is not sentimentality; it is a small market with a long memory. It is also why we would rather tell a client that a refrigeration retrofit will not pay out than sell them the study.

A note on how we work

Gas engineering questions are almost always answered faster by looking at the plant than by looking at the model. Our engineers get on site, pull samples, read the historian rather than the monthly report, and talk to the operator who has been running the unit for eleven years and already knows what changed. The model comes afterwards, calibrated to what the plant actually does. It is a slower start and a much faster finish.

Being based in Calgary makes that practical. Most Alberta gas plants are within a day’s reach, and the flights north and northwest out of the city are frequent enough that a site visit does not consume a week. The city gives something back for the effort, too. Canmore and the Bow Valley are an hour west, the Folk Festival takes over Prince’s Island for a weekend every summer, Sled Island fills the Beltline with bands in June, and the Devonian Gardens hide an acre of indoor jungle four storeys above 8th Avenue for the months when nobody wants to be outside. Engineers who could earn more in Houston or Dubai stay here because of that combination, and the depth of the local talent pool is the direct result.
